14 May, 2024: Publisher Emailed Me, But I'm Declining

Writer's picture: Zara DayZara Day

This afternoon, I found an email in my inbox from Olympia, the group I talked about earlier this month. They have stated their interest in offering a "hybrid" publishing offer, which essentially means I pay an initial fee, and they cover everything after that. Unfortunately, this was when I decided to look them up, and it turns out they are considered a vanity press, which, according to my research, is not a good situation to get into.

Note: For legal reasons, I will not be going into the negative aspects of vanity presses or allegations against Olympia Publishers, as I'm not trying to risk libel charges for a blog post. Suffice to say, look it up if you want to know more.

It is unfortunate that this is the case because it is probably the first time any publishers have shown interest in my work. I'm actually on the verge of crying because I genuinely was hoping this could work out for me, but I think it is better I find out now versus getting a contract and being stuck having my work not read by anyone. I will try being more careful in the future submitting my manuscript to groups. I just sent an email declining the offer, which stung me all the more, but I will try not to be too upset at this time. I'll let you know if I hear more.

In other news, I am starting my first class for the summer tomorrow. I've already turned in the first week's discussion posts. I have two this summer and three this. fall, and then I will graduate with my Bachelor's soon after. I'm going to need to power through to get this done, but I know I have the ability to do it, and once it is complete, that will be a HUGE relief.

Thank you for reading,

Zara
