I just finished my first short story, a companion piece to my latest novel, Free Drifter. It was my way of dealing with the negative thoughts and feelings I had yesterday, and it was really nice to have the whole thing out of my head finally. If anyone wants to read it, I'll be linking to it below. It isn't required reading for Free Drifter, nor is Free Drifter required to read Hightlighting Mundanity. All it is is an exploration of a concept I couldn't really hit on in my novel. It also turned out longer than I had thought it would. It is the first piece of writing I've done specifically to be short and self-contained, with the final thing coming in at 5700 words.
It's also my first time writing in the first person and present tense. I don't know how I would do writing novels in that style. It feels unnatural to me, but then I don't read a lot of books in that style. I would otherwise say it's a bite-sized taste of my writing style. I would love to write more short stories, but I don't have any ideas for them at the moment.
Otherwise, this holiday break will probably include me working on Columbian. I've been making some progress on that, though I still don't feel the crime part is up to snuff. I've been doing drawings to help me plot out characters. I think it helps to have visual aids for characters so I don't mix them up. My challenge with this book is to have secondary characters that don't blend into the background. Wish me luck.
Thank you for reading,
Zara
